Ant ControlAnts are social insects. They live in colonies. If you are going to control an infestation of ants, you have to kill the colony. The basics of controlling ants in or at your home is to identify the types of ants involved. Following is a list of the most common types of ants. Not all of these ants may be in your area.
•Carpenter Ants
•Odorous house ant
•Crazy ant
•Pavement ant
•Fire ant
•Ghost ant
•Argentine ant
•Pharaoh ant
•Little black ant
Although most ants may be killed by the same method, misidentifying an ant may result in a continuing infestation. If you are unable to identify a particular type of ant, Put the ant in a vial of alcohol and take it to a known pest control operator in your area to help with the identification.
As was said before, the pest approach to use in controlling ant infestations is to find and treat the colony, except for Pharaoh ants. Pharaoh ant colonies will be located in obscure, secluded locations which are difficult to access. Pharaoh ants are best controlled by baiting. It is more important to find the foraging trails of worker ants than to spend time looking for the colonies.
It is very important to treat the ant colonies directly because no more than 10% of any ant colony is out foraging at any one time. Killing that 10% leaves 90% of the colony intact. New trail of foraging ants will appear within weeks or even days.
May ants will have trails that extend 20, 30, 50 feet or more from the colony. Most ant infestations are a result of ants foraging inside from outside colonies, except for most Pharaoh ant infestations. It might only take a few minutes to follow a trail of ants back to the colony's location. Occasionally, it might prove to be more difficult. If you don't take the time to find the colony, you will rarely control the infestation.
Here are a few tips which will help you find and follow ant trails.
•Look under the edge of carpets and baseboards for ant trails.
•Ants tend to follow edges and corners of items. Look for trails along corners, the edge of sidewalks, the edge of bricks, blocks and other types of siding, and other edges which might be present.
•Pull grass and other vegetation away from the base of the foundation, sidewalks, patios, driveways, etc. Many ant species often trail behind the grass unseen unless the grass is pulled away. Whole colonies of ants will live in the same locations.
•Inspect the branches of trees and shrubs which touch the building. Many ant species trail onto buildings via tree and shrub branches.
If you find ant colonies living in soil under rocks and other items, drench them with a residual insecticide. Use enough insecticide to thoroughly treat the entire colony. Ants can also live under landscape timbers and other items and extend under adjacent items. Be sure to lift these items and treat any ants found.
If you find ant colonies living in the mulch of a landscape bed or under piled leaves, rake back the mulch or leaves to expose the colony and drench the entire area. If you don't, you probably will still have ants because the surviving ants will move, possibly inside your building or home. If you find ants living inside of a wall void, you will probably have to drill a hole to treat the ants.
Some ants can be controlled by baiting, others can't. Some ants that don't respond good to baits are crazy ants, ghost ants, white-footed ants, and Argentine ants.
